Represent a Number in Multiple Ways

This week we have been working on representing numbers in multiple ways.
We have worked on....
1. Standard form using the numerals
2. Word form where we write out the words.   Students are learning to use a hyphen to connect the tens and the ones.
3.  Expanded form is where we use the value of the numbers to create a number sentence.   For example, 84 =80+4
4.  Base ten models where we represent the number using tens rods and unit cubes.
5.  Decomposing the numbers where we look at other combinations of tens and ones.  Ex.  84 can be...
                   8 tens and 4 ones
                   7 tens and 14 ones
                   6 tens and 24 ones
                   5 tens and 34 ones
                   Etc...

Base Ten Models

Tonight for math homework, students are asked to draw place value or base ten models of numbers.   In the math section of their binders, students have problems we worked on together in class.   Below you will see an example as well.  I hope this will help with homework!!

Terrific Thursday

Today was a great day!   We started our day working on composing and decomposing numbers.
We then worked on making predictions from the pictures we see in a book.   We also began to look at our vocabulary words for the story, The Relatives Came. We took a brain break to "whip and nae-nae".
After a busy day in second grade, we had a fun night at the Back to School Bash!!!   Here are a few pictures I was able to capture in the midst of all the fun!!!

I am loving every minute with these fun kiddos!!!

Another Great Day

Today we started working on second grade curriculum!   We took a pretest in math to decide what we know and don't know about place value.   Then we began talking about authors.  We looked at what an author is and where authors get their ideas.
We also looked at why authors write.

We introduced the author that we are going to be studying...Cynthia Rylant.   I think we are going to have a great year of learning this year!!!

AHOY MATEY!!!!

Wow!!!  It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over.  I can't wait to get back to school to start our wonderful year with some awesome kids!!  To get our year started off correctly, I wanted to let you all know a little about myself and our classroom.

All About Mrs. McAbee

This is my 15th year teaching.  I am married to my best friend Jason and I have one spoiled rotten second grade boy named Grant.  I am a Christian, a wife, a mother, a teacher, a sister, and a friend.  I love to work puzzles.   My favorite subjects in school have always been math and science.  I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, and reading.

Our Classroom

This year, I classroom will be a place of learning and fun.  We will explore our wonders and find answers to our questions.  As a part of this learning, students will be reading and writing in all subject areas.  Students will have opportunities to use technology in multiple formats.  Students will work independently, in pairs, and in groups.  We will work together to find ways to meet the needs of all students.
