Wednesday

In Science, we are learning about different habitats around the world.   Today the students worked on a note-taking activity in which they listened to learn.   We watched a very short video about the forest habitat and the boys had to pick out important information.

In writing today, the kids were shown the following picture.

They were then asked to write a story about this picture.   They found this activity to be quite hilarious.

In reading, we continued looking at characters but focused more on their feelings and motivations.   We read Thank You, Mr. Falter which is an awesome story about bullying and the emotions that are caused by bullying.

In math, we focused on writing numbers in words.

In Social Studies, we worked on researching the regions of South Carolina.

It has been a very busy but great day in third grade!!!

Character Traits

This week in reading, we are learning about how a character's traits help to develop the plot of a story.  We will be using Patricia Polacco's books as we dive into plot.   On Monday, we read My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother.  Be sure to ask your sons about Richard and Patricia and their character traits!!!

Week One

The first week was AWESOME!!!   I have loved getting to know MY boys.   We worked a lot on building our community as our team building skills through STEM activities.

Monday...Marshmallow tower

The students were asked to use masking tape and spaghetti to build a tower.   They then had to put a marshmallow on top.

This was a difficult task and only two groups were successful.   However, we learned a lot.   We learned we have to use our materials wisely and we have to talk to one another.

Tuesday... Golf Ball Catcher

The students had to catch a golf ball without letting it fall through or bounce off.   They were very creative in what the came up with.

They learned that we all have good ideas and that there may be more than one solution to any problem.

Wednesday and Thursday...Sneak a peek with Legos

On Wednesday , I built a Lego creation and hid it under a bucket.   The kids were broken into groups.   One person was able to come peek at my creation and then report back to the rest of the group. They would work for 5 minutes and then another person could peek.   The first picture is mine.  The rest are what the kids came up with in their groups.

No group was able to completely duplicate mine but they did an awesome job.   We learned that we have to use our communication skills carefully.   We also learned that we have to pay close attention to details.

Friday...Cup Stacking Challenge

This was a fun challenge.

This challenge taught us to take our time and that slow and steady wins the race.

Throughout the week, the kids were having fun but we were also learning so much about each other, about how to be successful, and how to always do our best!!!   I can't wait to see what the rest of the year will hold!!!

I have written a request to receive 5 stools that will give the boys an opportunity to have alternative seating during the day.  We have approximately $100 left to go before we will get the stools.  If anyone could donate toward our project, it would be AWESOME!!!

Oh What a Happy Mess!!!

Today students from Mrs. Schafer's Spanish class at BSMS came to help the second grade make piñatas.   We had flour, water, salt, and newspaper everywhere but we had a blast doing it!!!

We will let them dry over the weekend and see how they look on Monday.   Hopefully we will be able to fill them up and hang them for a Cinco de Mayo celebration :).

First Annual OES Market

The first OES Market was a success!!! We made a grand total of $613.05! Our class alone made $139.55, which is above and beyond our predictions. Thank you so much to the parents that donated the needed resources, came to shop, and encouraged/supported the children during this meaningful learning experience. Have a wonderful Spring Break!
