A Busy Week

Wow!  We had a wonderful but busy week this week.  Let me give you a quick glimpse of all that went on this past week....

Monday
Monday was exciting due to the surprise I received in the mail...

I received this box from my "Santa" from Reddittgifts.com.  Inside I found...

I thought this was an awesome gift for our class to use.

Tuesday

We began to work on sequencing through looking at  beginning, middle, and end.  Students read Henry and Mudge and then filled out a graphic organizer.  They retold the story through telling just the most important parts of the BME.

The students were also able to become scientists.  They worked in groups to create Fireworks in a jar.

Be sure to have your child tell you what we discovered about oil and water.

Wednesday through Friday

We had some VERY special visitors at OES.  I loved getting to meet the kids' grandparents.

I can't WAIT to see what this week holds!!!

The Week Ahead

I can't believe we are already starting our fourth week of school!!!  This week will be a busy but exciting week.  Don't forget that Goodies with Grandparents is on Wednesday at 7:00.  I can't wait to meet all of the wonderful grandparents that will be attending.  Also, I will be sending signed papers home again on Tuesday.  This will allow you to see all of the graded work so far.  Normally, papers will come home every two weeks but I wanted you all to be able to see these first graded papers as soon as possible.  Below you will find a quick glimpse of the week ahead.

Math
We will continue learning about place value in math.  We will be looking at how place value can help us add and subtract either 10 or 100 mentally.
Reading
In reading, we will continue to study the works of Cynthia Rylant.  We will be reading Poppleton and Mr. Putter and Tabby.  We will be looking at the beginning, middle, and ending of a story and how a character develops throughout the story.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will be looking at how to read a map.  The students are also looking at where they are located on a map.
Spelling
We are still working on short vowel sounds in spelling.  You should have received your child's spelling list on Friday.
Writing
In writing, we are continuing to look at staying on topic when we are writing.
Science
The scientific method continues to be our focus in science.  We are planning to put that process into practice with some exciting experiments this week.

I am looking forward to a great week!!

Picture Day

Don't forget that Picture Day is tomorrow!!!!

Tuesday, September 2

Today in math, the students were given a problem to solve.
They were told to see what the question was asking and then use whatever tools necessary to solve the problem.
Students were given think time alone and then were allowed to work with a partner.  Below you will see some of their solutions.
Then we took all of their answers and we decided on a correct answer together.  Students had to talk in their groups explaining why/how they had solved the problem.  We looked at how to make sense of the problem together.

Friday, August 29,2014

Today has been a great day in Room 100.   We started the day with a fire drill.  Our class did an excellent job of staying quiet and walking quickly.  Once we came in from outside, we had a special visitor come to speak to the kids.

Mrs. Barfield (the mother of one of our second grade students) is a published author.  Throughout the week this week we have discussed what is an author, who can be an author, and where does an author get his/her ideas.  Mrs. Barfield went through the process of how she became an author and where she gets her ideas.  The kids are looking forward to her new book that is set to be released in October.

Today was also college colors day.  We had several students participate and we had a great time!
Bailey supported Wofford.

Dominick was pulling for Kentucky.

Of course we had a some USC Gamecock fans.
But our biggest group were the CLEMSON fans!!!!!!!!
GO TIGERS 😉

I hope everyone has a safe, long weekend!
